Urinary tract infection is caused by bacteria contamination of the urinary tract. The main type of bacteria is Escherichia coli. Bacteria can enter the urinary tract by going up the urethra for women. Women are more prone to urinary tract infection as they have shorter urethras, and hence the urinary is nearer to the anus and vagina, which are places where bacteria growth is the most.

For a healthy person, one is able to fight against bacterial growth by a few ways. Urine can wash away most of the bacteria, and the pH in urine is able to inhibit growth of more bacteria. Also, the surface of the bladder is antimicrobial and can keep bacteria away. White cells are also secreted into urine to fight infection if bacteria did enter the urine tract.

However, there are many factors that can cause urine tract infection to happen:

  • Sexual activity, which can allow bacteria to enter the urethra, is one of the main causes of infection.
  • Changes in vaginal flora caused by usage of spermicides and diaphragms.
  • Urine incontinence
  • Menopause
  • Diabetes
  • Some urine left in bladder after urinating
  • Changes caused by pregnancy and childbirth
  • Elderly people
  • Too much of bubble bath or salt bath
  • In men, blockage of urinary tract caused by enlarged prostate
Urinary tract infection can be treated with medication to relief pain and anti-bacteria medication to kill bacteria that cause infection. However, antibiotic does not seemed to work well with people with urinary tract infection. Hence, one is required to do a few tests to find the correct medication and treatment for the condition.

Women with urinary tract infection should drink a lot of water per day so that one can pass out urine regularly to keep bacteria away from urinary tract. To soothe discomfort, one can take warm baths once or twice. Also, one can try to pour a cup of warm water over the genital area while urinating for burning relief. One should also not have sexual intercourse until the condition is cured. Lubricant or oil can be used during sexual intercourse to help pain relief in the urethra and also reduce the number of bacteria entering the urethra. Wash away the lubricant immediately after intercourse as most of the bacteria are trapped inside the lubricant.

Take action early to cure your urinary tract infection before it gets worse.
