Human immunodeficiency virus or HIV is an infection which attacks the immune system. It destroys the CD4+CELL, an important component of the immune system, making it difficult for the body to fight diseases and infections.

Engaging in unprotected sex with someone who is HIV positive is one of the most common ways of acquiring HIV infection. The virus enters another person's body thru semen, blood and vaginal fluids. You can also get infected by using shared needles when injecting drugs. Casual contact like sharing drinking glass or kissing an infected person cannot spread HIV.

Early symptoms of HIV infections are mouth sores, sore throat, headache, muscular stiffness or aching, diarrhea, fever, swollen lymph glands. Skin rash of various types may also develop along with frequent vaginal yeast infection. However, many people have no early symptoms of HIV. People with HIV infection may not have symptoms for 10 years but can still transmit the infection to others.

AIDS is the most severe phase of HIV infection. During this stage, a person's risk of developing infection and certain cancer increases. Having HIV does not necessarily mean you have AIDS. Those who seek treatment while still on the early stage of infection may live longer. Early treatment with the use of drugs which slows down HIV infection may decrease progression of the disease to AIDS.

HIV can be treated but is difficult to cure. Successful treatment of the disease helps suppress the virus but does not cure HIV. Regular intake and correct medication is a must so that the virus will not become resistant to the drugs.

You can avoid being infected with HIV by not having sex with different people or to those who have numerous sex partners. Do not have sex with prostitutes. Do not use IV drugs or share needles. Do not have sex with people who use IV drugs. Practice safer sex behaviors. Avoid anal intercourse or oral, vaginal contact with semen.

To protect your self from acquiring HIV infection prevention is the key.
